“I Just Bought My First Gun”

Apr 07, 2016

So, record number of firearms have been sold in the last several years. Most new purchasers I talk with have confided that they have no idea what to do next. The purchase of a firearm is often the reaction to a very real feeling and buying a gun is the single most tangible action they know to take.

Now sitting at home with your new firearm, you look at the box and if you’re like the several million other citizens out there, you ask the yourself what next?

Here’s a few suggestions:

DONOT put it in the closet and go about your life. Owning a firearm for self-defense is a commitment that needs to be taken seriously. It may take a little effort and a few bucks, but you need to get some instruction and maybe even a little legal advice as soon as possible.

DO seek out advice from others. The staff at the gun store are often good (they may be a little scary or intense but are probably good folks that want to help), a professional class is always good. Even online resources are plentiful, but be aware not everything on the internet is real or true!

And this is the big one, PRACTICE! Find a few ranges in your area and make the time to become proficient. You don’t need to become a gunfighter, but you do need to be competent to handle, use and even clean your firearm. If you don’t feel you will be able to make this commitment, maybe you would feel better exploring other self-defense options like pepper spray or Tasers.

Be SAFE!
